    Reciprocity

The State of Utah, will reciprocate only specific, active contractor license classifications from the following states:

    • Arizona
    • California
    • Louisiana
    • Nevada
    • South Carolina

NOTE: You cannot reciprocate a license from a state where you have not tested. Candidates from Arizona, California, Louisiana, Nevada, and South Carolina must have held their license the number of years equivalent to the Utah experience requirement for the license classification(s) for which they are applying. Please note that Arizona has three levels of licensure: commercial, residential and dual.

Contractor must have an active electrical and or plumbing contractor license(s) classification(s) for an underlying trade license before they can be awarded a Utah State Contractor License. Additionally, Utah license classifications that do not have a corresponding license category with another state are not reciprocated.

Trade tests may be waived. However, in some cases prospective licensees will need to test. This is especially true when the applicant comes to Utah from a state listed above and they didn't test in that state, but reciprocated to that state from yet another state. Please take note of the verification of licensure reference to testing or reciprocity. When in doubt, contact the Board or Contractor School Online @ www.contractorschoolonline.com  or call Toll Free @ 800-966-9596.

There are other states that do license contractors, BUT Utah does not have a reciprocal agreement with them. Candidates can get verifications of licensure from those states to help prove their experience as a licensed contractor or contact Board or Contractor School Online and they may be able to assist you with information you’re inquiring about. Candidates will have to be reviewed, for experience only, on a case-by-case basis in several states.

    QUALIFICATIONS FOR LICENSURE

Rules for licensure require an applicant to meet certain experience requirements.   In the past 10 years, a minimum of four years of full-time related experience, two years of which shall be in a supervisory or managerial position for applicants of the following contractor classifications:

    E100-General Engineering

    B100-General Building

    R100-Residential and Small Commercial

In the past 10 years, a minimum of four years of full-time related experience for applicants of the following contractor classifications:

    S220-Carpentry

    S290-General Masonry

    S320-Steel Erection

    S350-Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning

    S360-Refrigeration

    S370-Fire Suppression

In the past 10 years, a minimum of two years of full-time related experience for applicants of all other contractor classifications not listed above, excluding electrical and plumbing.

    RECIPROCAL EXAMINATIONS

The Board will accept certain examinations an equivalent substitute for the Utah trade classification examinations required if taken in one the following states.

    Arizona

    California

    Louisiana

    Nevada

    South Carolina

NOTE : Examinations given in any other state are not acceptable substitutes for the Utah trade classification examinations. See the Reciprocal State License Classification. If the applicant was licensed in any of the above states but did not take the trade classification examination, then they must take the Utah trade classification examination.

    EXPERIENCE

If the applicant has held a comparable license in one of the above states for the number of years of experience required in

Utah, then verification of the licensure for the number of years required is acceptable to verify experience for the Utah license. The number of year’s license (experience) must be in the same trade classification for which an examination is given. A Utah Electrician or Plumbers license is required for the qualifier on electrician and plumbing. Please scroll down to see the Utah Electrician or Plumbers license requirements to become a licensed electrician or plumber in Utah.

You must pass the required examination PRIOR to submission of your contractor application to the Division. It is a requirement of the Division that all applicants take the Utah Business and Law Examination. The Utah Business and Law Examination requirement will only be waived if the qualifying individual has passed the test previously.

    EXAMINATION REGISTRATION AND SCHEDULING PROCEDURES

A fee is for each examination, whether you are taking the examination for the first time or repeating. Candidates must wait 30 days before retaking the examination they did not pass.  Candidates are allowed 3 attempts to pass each examination. After 3 failed attempts, they must wait 6 months before retaking the examination they did not pass.

    REQUIRED IDENTIFICATION AT EXAMINATION SITE

You must provide 2 forms of identification. One must be a VALID form of government issued identification (driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID), which bears your signature and has your photograph. The second ID must have your signature and preprinted legal name.

    SCORE REPORTING

In order to pass the examinations, you must receive a score of at least 70%. You will receive your score report immediately following the completion of the examination.
